Reconnecting with Old Comrades

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

Recently, Tom had the privilege of sharing breakfast with BG Mike Downs, distinguished for commanding Fox during the Tet Offensive of '68. Tom was honored to discuss with BGen Downs the formation of 27th Marine Regiment, a Mechanized Combined-Arms Task Force (MCATF) which BGen Downs would later command after Tom transferred to Headquarters Marine Corps. The MTATF was one of a kind task force, which Tom contributed to developing for a specific mission in Iran, later resolved diplomatically under President Reagan’s leadership.

During their recent reunion, they reminisced about their endeavors in shaping a unique fighting force and crafting tactics, techniques, and procedures that were unprecedented in the Corps. After all – what better reason for two old comrades to get together.

Tom's journey since arriving in the U.S. has been a marathon of experiences. He was recently honored with a Quilt of Valor. It was a very special ceremony, made more so by the many cadet leaders who made the effort to spend time with Tom. The new President of UNG, along with the Commandant of Cadets were also present.

Tom had the honor of paying a courtesy call to the Commandant of Cadets, retired Army Colonel Joe Matthews. The meeting unveiled the university, its state-of-the-art facilities, and its rich academic offerings.
